Author Interview

Your book debuted in July in Australia, but it doesn’t come out until 2018 in the US! Could you talk a little about your experience with juggling publication in different countries?

A: I haven’t had much experience yet! All the negotiating and contracts happened through Penguin Random House Australia, so I haven’t even had the opportunity to speak to my US editor at this point. But I’m SO excited – Anne Hoppe used to be Terry Pratchett’s US editor! I can’t wait to work with her.

I absolutely love the names of the main characters! How did you pick their names?

A: Thank you! For Lintang and Bayani, I was looking for SE Asian names to match the feel of their home, and I chose them based on their meanings. Some of the other names of the crew (like Eire, pronounce “ire”) I made up specifically because of how you say them.

What was one of the most interesting things you had to research while writing LINTANG AND THE PIRATE QUEEN?

A: The mythies in my book are inspired by mythical creatures around the world, which was fun to research, but my goodness, so gory! I ended up changing most of their attributes from the original mythology, though there are still some recognisable creatures in there.

What’s your favorite food? (curious minds want to know 😉 )

A: This is going to sound weird to anyone not in Australia, but I am so in love with Golden Gaytimes. They’re an epic ice cream that requires me to take a billion lactose tablets before I can eat them, but they’re SO WORTH IT.

Your website mentioned that each book in the trilogy will be releasing 6 months after the previous book! How do you balance writing/editing with teaching (your full time job)?

A: With extreme difficulty. I actually spent 15 years writing consistently before I got a publishing contract, so at least I’m in the habit of writing outside work hours. Honestly, I had to drop a day of teaching. I was burning out!

How did Marissa Meyer become one of your beta readers?

A: Believe it or not, we used to write Sailor Moon fanfiction together about ten years ago. We met on fanfiction.net and started critiquing each other’s work. Eventually it progressed to manuscripts. Now I get to read all her awesome stories first!

Is your dog’s name really Tilly McSchmoopyface? If so, how did you come up with the name? (And can we see a picture?)

A: Yes, she’s really called Tilly McSchmoopyface. My husband wanted to call her Schmoopy and I told him that was a silly name, totally disrespectful… so we decided on McSchmoopyface instead. (But Tilly was easier to write on all the forms.)

Have two pictures, and try telling me that is not the schmoopiest face.

EE18ers ~ Author Interview w/ Melissa Sarno + Giveaway!

Author Interview I noticed on your website that you’ve written children’s books previously, but JUST UNDER THE CLOUDS is your MG debut. Why did you decide to write a MG book? Cora, the main character of JUST UNDER THE CLOUDS, really dictated my ‘switch’ to middle grade. Her voice and story were very strong and insistent, straight from the beginning. As soon as I realized I was writing from the […]

EE18ers ~ Author Interview w/ T. E. Carter + Giveaway!

Author Interview I STOP SOMEWHERE is a dark contemporary. Are there any trigger warnings that you’d like to tell potential readers? The entire novel is about rape culture and sexual assault, so it should be pretty clear from the start that this is a tough read. It’s not graphic necessarily but it’s certainly very clearly about this topic. Is there any symbolism behind the cover? I didn’t have any […]

Interview w/ Kristen Orlando, ..

INTERVIEW Why did you decide to write a spy novel? I have always loved action movies and suspenseful books, but this idea hit me out of nowhere to be perfectly honest. In fact, I came up with the idea for YOU DON’T KNOW MY NAME in the shower of all places. My husband and I had just watched the movie, Red, which is about retired CIA operatives hunted by assassins. […]

Sweet & Swanky 17ers~ Introducing…Kristen Orlando w/ an Interview + Excerpt from YOU DON’T KNOW MY NAME + Giveaway!

Author Interview What was the craziest thing you researched? I did some extensive research for this book because I wanted it to feel as real as possible. I wanted the reader to walk away thinking, “Hmmm maybe there really is a top secret group like the Black Angels within our government”. So I did a ton of research on the CIA, even interviewed government officials about how the CIA works […]

Blog Tour: Interview w/ the Author of Lock & Mori + Giveaway!!!

INTERVIEW Why did you decide to write a modern day Sherlock story? I read an article about the nemesis relationships in literature that used Sherlock and Moriarty as one of the examples. In it, the writer explained that the only information we have about Moriarty from the canon comes from Sherlock, because no one else meets Moriarty, not even Watson. I hadn’t noticed that when I read the books and […]
