When Amy, on her way to becoming valedictorian of her graduating class and getting accepted to her dream school, gets dumped by her long-term boyfriend, she takes a job at a record store to ease the pain. She needs a distraction, badly.

Oliver, Amy’s record store co-worker, isn’t so sure about Amy—his complete opposite—but what he is sure of is his decision not to go to college. He just can’t figure out how to tell his mother.

As they work late-night shifts at the record store, Amy and Oliver become friends and then confidantes and then something more, but when Amy has a hard time letting go of what she thought was her perfect future with her ex, she risks losing the future she didn’t even know she wanted with Oliver.

Book Review

All Our Worst Ideas is about a girl who expects nothing but the best from herself. She has the perfect boyfriend, is in the running to be valedictorian of her high school class, and plans to get into Stanford. But, when she suddenly starts a new part time job, everything seems to go awry. Her boyfriend decides to break up with her and she has a unique co-worker at her new job who is slightly attractive…and slightly distracting.

I love reading books that feature smart heroines, but one of my least favorite tropes is when a girl decides to ruin her future for a boy. So, once I got to the middle of this book, I was a bit worried. Would it end up being a book I loved or a book I hated? Well, for fear of spoiling, I’m not going to say much more than…I loved it!

All Our Worst Ideas was a really fun read because the characters all had depth. Plus, not only were they well-written, but they also surprised me. The author did an amazing job of setting up the reader to fall into the trap of “oh I bet X character will do Y thing because of Z reason…” BUT THEN SOMETHING ELSE WOULD HAPPEN INSTEAD. Actually, this book makes me realize the importance of not judging people based on initial impressions. I really can’t say more without spoiling but I loved that I couldn’t predict what was going to happen.

Throughout All Our Worst Ideas, there is a series of messy friendships, relationships, and family moments. There were times of sadness and frustration, but also times of happiness and feeling proud. It is also a book where many characters have to decide whether or not they should stick with their convictions, regardless of the results.

“My heart is pounding, the way your heart pounds when you’ve made up your mind, when you know what you want, when you know you’re going to go after it.”

Overall I really enjoyed this book and give it 4.5/5 stars.

Blog Tour: This Adventure Ends by Emma Mills Guest Post

GUEST POST Could you tell us about your character building process specifically regarding Sloane’s family? In approaching this story, I knew that I wanted Sloane to have a close family unit. In shaping this family, I started with a sense of who Sloane is as a person- someone who cares for her loved ones deeply, but maybe has a harder time connecting with her peers. With […]

Blog Tour: Interview w/ the Author of Lock & Mori + Giveaway!!!

INTERVIEW Why did you decide to write a modern day Sherlock story? I read an article about the nemesis relationships in literature that used Sherlock and Moriarty as one of the examples. In it, the writer explained that the only information we have about Moriarty from the canon comes from Sherlock, because no one else meets Moriarty, not even Watson. I hadn’t noticed that when I read the books and […]

Blog Tour: The Ones by Daniel Sweren-Becker + Character Profile + Giveaway!

ARC REVIEW When I originally saw The Ones on the Mac request list, it intrigued me. I hadn’t heard of it prior to that moment, so I was excited to find out more, and was even more excited when it arrived in my mailbox. I started reading it, and was immediately shocked. It opens with a torture scene, which is definitely not what I was expecting. I don’t generally read […]

Blog Tour: The Possibility of Somewhere by Julia Day Guest Post!

GUEST POST Eden and Ash had very different upbringings, which shaped their personalities. Could you talk about getting to know both characters and how you made sure they were both fully developed? With Eden, the character development was more natural, since there are many aspects of her story that came from my own experiences. I was raised in a rural town in the Deep South. We were lower/middle income—and college […]

Pictures that Relate to Gifted Zimri Robinson works in the last human-operated fulfillment warehouse in the country. Most warehouses are now run with ANTs (Automated Nanobot Technology) so she’s always afraid she’ll lose her job. She lives in a POD (Personal Occupancy Domicile) with her ailing grandmother. I “borrowed” the idea for the POD from the work of Kent Larson at MIT. It’s a hyper-efficient, 200-square-foot apartment with moveable walls […]

Blog Tour: Tuned Into You by Cindy Dorminy Guest Post!!!

GUEST POST I’m still stunned. 2015 was a wild ride as far as my writing was concerned. I started out trying to find a home for my adult contemporary novel, Left Hanging, and ended up with a publishing contract for my YA novel, Tuned Into You. Yep. It was a year with more ups and downs than the Great American Scream Machine at Six Flags Over Georgia. To back […]

Blog Tour: Saving Montgomery Sole Interview + Giveaway!!!

INTERVIEW 1. Were there any characters that surprised you while writing? (Meaning- did any of them take control of the story) I’ve never had a character take control, but I’ve definitely misunderstood my characters. I think periodically I’ll get stuck in a kind of narrow perception of who my characters are, mostly I think because I’m writing from the POV of my main character. Some of my favorite things in […]
