If you’re a recent subscriber to ReadWriteLove28, you might have missed my glowing review of Damsel Distressed! If so, click HERE! I absolutely fell in love with Damsel Distressed from the moment that I started until the very end. Also, Kelsey Macke is one of the sweetest authors that I have met. <3
I am very excited to participate in the Six Month Bookiversary Bash! This post will contain an exclusive, ALTERNATE ENDING to Damsel Distressed! Please note- this is a spoiler if you haven’t finished the book!!!
I close the book and leave it sitting on my lap.
I’ve gone and made myself miss her.
The sadness that I know so well swells inside me and I feel it take its usual grip on my heart. I lay down in the lamplight, on my side, hugging the book to my chest and looking into the photographed face of my mother.
I wish, more than anything, that I’d been able to say goodbye.
But people don’t always get what they wish for. Even in fairy tales.
As I lay there, I feel the sadness growing, looking for its place to root, and I imagine drawing it into my heart instead. I know that it won’t go away, but it isn’t The Blob and it doesn’t have to absorb and destroy everything in its path.
My eyelids feel heavy, and I let them fall.
I listen to the sound of my breathing and know that I’m still here. Depression is here, but so am I. We are not one and the same.
Drowsiness wraps me in its warm folds, and I allow myself to relax.
In spite of myself, a smile creeps onto my face, and I begin to laugh softly into my pillow.
I open my eyes again, reaching over to turn out the light, and I look one more time into her face in the frame.
I have the most wonderful story to tell you, mom.
You’ll never believe it.
With a click, the light is gone and into the darkness, I imagine the feeling of telling her how her most beloved story plays out.
A two-hundred pound princess hidden in the shadows finds a way to step into the light. Though she is riddled with doubt, and those around her wait for her to fall, she stands. She finds her voice, gets her prince, and even wears a crown.
It’s a really great story, mom.
You’d love it.
Especially the ending… which, happily, I’m still working on.
Her whirlwind adventure was made even more unbelievable when she signed with fabulous agent, Jessica Sinsheimer of the Sarah Jane Freymann Literary Agency and, shortly after, Danielle Ellison of Spencer Hill Contemporary bought her debut.
DAMSEL DISTRESSED, and the companion album of original songs, Imogen Unlocked, were released in October 2014.
Also, if you’re interested in Imogen Unlocked, the companion CD, here is a little blurb about it. 🙂
Damsel Distressed is the story of Imogen, a girl who’s survived the years after her mother’s death by focusing squarely on her best friend, Grant, musical theatre, and lots of cheese. The book is full of humor and heart, and also contains a few surprises. Full page sketches are scattered throughout the novel, and each one contains a QR code that corresponds to a song from the book’s soundtrack. Imogen Unlocked is a 12-song album of original music written by the author, Kelsey, and her husband Daron as their indie-pop band, Wedding Day Rain. Together, the book Damsel Distressed and the soundtrack Imogen Unlocked work together to tell the story of a girl who might just make her own Happily Ever After, if she can just hold herself together.
