Hi everyone! My name is Kim Chance, and I’m the author of KEEPER, a young adult contemporary fantasy novel coming out on January 30th, 2018 from Flux Books! I am so excited to be here! Recently, I had the privilege to sit down with Lainey Styles, the main character from KEEPER, and ask her a couple of questions. I’m super stoked for all of you to have the chance to get to know her better!
So, let’s dive right into the questions!
Kim: Hi Lainey! Thanks so much for being here today!
Lainey: Thanks for having me! I’m so excited!
Kim: In KEEPER, you discover that like your mother, you’re a witch. What was that like?
Lainey: Honestly? *laughs* Well, let’s put it this way. I’ve wanted to be a scientist ever since I was a kid. Logic and reason are kind of my thing. Plus, my mom died when I was a baby, so the whole ‘surprise! You’re all powerful witch’ bomb really came out of nowhere. I struggled to believe it at first. I mean, who knew witches were real? *flips her long brown hair off her shoulder and smiles* I certainly didn’t…but here I am!
Kim: How does it feel to be a KEEPER?
Lainey: Well, it’s more like THE Keeper since I’m the only one left. My mother was the Keeper before she died, but it’s my job now and that’s something I take very seriously. And how does it feel? Well, it’s a little intense. There are a lot of people who want me dead. But this is who I was always meant to be, and knowing that I’m fulfilling my destiny is an amazing feeling.
Kim: You said there are people who want you dead. Can you tell us about that?
Lainey: *shrugs* Being the Keeper means that it’s my responsibility to protect the Grimoire. There are a lot of people out there who would kill to have their hands on such a powerful spell book. *frowns* One in particular would stop at nothing to be able to unlock its power…but I will never let that happen.
Kim: Wow, you must be a really brave person.
Lainey: Not really. I’m scared all the time. But I can’t let my fear stop me, ya know? I might be a witch, but I’m a still a teenage girl and I get freaked out all the time. I work through it though; I have to.
Kim: What is the best and most difficult thing about being a Keeper?
Lainey: The best thing is definitely the magic! I’m still trying to get the hang of it, but I’m getting better! I haven’t electrocuted anyone with lightning yet—so that’s a plus! *laughs* It’s also knowing that I’m carrying on my mother’s legacy. It’s a reminder that’s she always with me. The most difficult? *grins* Well, as my best friend, Maggie would say, “with great power comes great responsibility.”
Kim: In KEEPER, you and Maggie are inseparable. Can you tell us a little bit about your friendship?
Lainey: Maggie is amazing. She’s funny and brave and always has my back. Comic books are her life, and she’s always trying to get me to read one. She’s never once let me down, and I honestly wouldn’t be where I am today if it weren’t for her. She’s the best friend in the whole world!
Kim: Aw, that’s so sweet! Anyone else special in your life?
Lainey: Well, there’s my Uncle Gareth and his girlfriend, Serena, of course. They’re the closest things I have to parents. Gareth and I are really close.
Kim: What about that really cute guy I saw you talking to before the interview?
Lainey: *blushes* Oh, that’s just Ty.
Kim: Just Ty?
Lainey: *blush deepens* Trust me…it’s complicated.
Kim: I’m sensing there’s a story there. Wink, wink, nudge, nudge!
Lainey: *shifts uncomfortably in seat* Uhhh…next question?
Kim: Okay, how about some fun ones! If you were going to attend Hogwarts what house would you belong in?
Lainey: I’ve always thought I was a Hufflepuff, but Maggie argues that I’m more of a Ravenclaw so…RavenPuff!
Kim: I’m a Gryffindor myself. If you were a dog, what breed would you be and why?
Lainey: *laughs* Hmmm…. let’s go with a Labrador! I’m smart and friendly!
Kim: Great! What’s your idea of a perfect day?
Lainey: A thunderstorm, a warm blanket, a cup of hot tea, and good book.
Kim: You’re a girl after my own heart! What’s your favorite book?
Lainey: Hands down, The Great Gatsby. I’ve read it more times than I can count. Fitzgerald writes so beautifully! I can literally quote that book. *clears throat* ‘Compared to the great distance that had separated him from Daisy it had seemed very near to her, almost touching her. It had seemed as close as a star to the moon. Now it was again a green light on a dock. His count of enchanted objects had diminished by one.’
Kim: *applauds*Girl, I couldn’t agree more! It’s my favorite book too! What’s your favorite food?
Lainey: Pizza. Always pizza. I could eat it every day and not get sick of it.
Kim: Do you have a favorite band?
Lainey: I like all kinds of music, really. As long as it has a good beat, I’m good to go. I do really love Imagine Dragons and Twenty One Pilots, though.
Kim: Okay, so last one. What’s your motto or mantra? Has it changed since becoming the Keeper?
Lainey: I don’t know that I really had a motto before all of this. I spent too much time memorizing SAT words and pouring over college brochures to give it much thought. But now that I’m the KEEPER? I definitely have one. *grins widely* “Magic always leaves a mark.”
Kim: Wow! Well, thank you so much, Lainey! It was a pleasure chatting with you and I am so excited for everyone to read KEEPER!
Lainey: Thank you so much! Me too! See you guys on January 30th!

When a 200-year-old witch attacks her, sixteen-year-old bookworm Lainey Styles is determined to find a logical explanation. Even with the impossible staring her in the face, Lainey refuses to believe it—until she finds a photograph linking the witch to her dead mother.
After consulting a psychic, Lainey discovers that she, like her mother, is a Keeper: a witch with the exclusive ability to unlock and wield the Grimoire, a dangerous but powerful spell book. But there’s a problem. The Grimoire has been stolen by a malevolent warlock who is desperate for a spell locked inside it—a spell that would allow him to siphon away the world’s magic.
With the help of her comic-book-loving best friend and an enigmatic but admittedly handsome street fighter, Lainey must leave her life of college prep and studying behind to prepare for the biggest test of all: stealing back the book
