Sloane isn't expecting to fall in with a group of friends when she moves from New York to Florida—especially not a group of friends so intense, so in love, so all-consuming. Yet that's exactly what happens.

Sloane becomes closest to Vera, a social-media star who lights up any room, and Gabe, Vera's twin brother and the most serious person Sloane's ever met. When a beloved painting by the twins' late mother goes missing, Sloane takes on the responsibility of tracking it down, a journey that takes her across state lines—and ever deeper into the twins' lives.

Filled with intense and important friendships, a wonderful warts-and-all family, shiveringly good romantic developments, and sharp, witty dialogue, this story is about finding the people you never knew you needed.

GUEST POST

Could you tell us about your character building process specifically regarding Sloane’s family?

In approaching this story, I knew that I wanted Sloane to have a close family unit. In shaping this family, I started with a sense of who Sloane is as a person- someone who cares for her loved ones deeply, but maybe has a harder time connecting with her peers. With that in mind, I wanted Sloane to have a sibling, but one with a bit of an age difference. Laney, who is nine years younger, is someone Sloane is able to interact with and relate to in a different way.

Sloane’s father was a really fun character to write. I wanted Sloane to have a strong relationship with her dad. I think she and her father share a sense of humor, and they both have passionate personalities, and get swept up in new pursits easily. I thought of Sloane’s mom as someone who serves as the backbone for the family- the voice of reason, and a counter-weight to Sloane’s father.

With all of this in mind, the characters really seemed to take a life of their own when I was writing!
