Author Interview

I love the name Brienna! How did you come up with her name?
I wanted Brienna’s name to be 1) Unique 2) Easy to pronounce 3) Reflect her characteristics. At the root, her name is derived from the celtic “Brianna,” which means “strong, to ascend.” But I also wanted her name to be her own, so I dropped -anna for -enna. Little did I know at the time that “Enna” means “awe, fear, terror,” which are things Brienna struggles with, encounters and overcomes.

After reading the synopsis, I can’t quite tell where it takes place. Could you give us some insight?
IMPASSIONED is a high fantasy set in an imagined world that is largely inspired by Renaissance France, Medieval Ireland and England. The southern kingdom is called Valenia, where the passions thrive. The northern kingdom is Maevana, a country trying to emerge from the Dark Ages beneath an unrighteous king. Brienna has grown up in Valenia, but has always felt drawn to Maevana. And you will soon learn why 🙂

If you lived in the world of IMPASSIONED, which of the 5 passions would you have?
I would love to be art or music, but alas, I think I would have to settle for knowledge. Much like Brienna, I am not innately talented in art, music, dramatics or wit. But I am studious and a voracious reader, so I think I would do best in the swanky realm of knowledge.

IMPASSIONED is going to be translated into a multitude of languages. What was your reaction when you found out?
I was/still am completely blown away by it. Once IMPASSIONED was acquired by Harper, my agent began to send me the foreign offers as they came in, and I would laugh and cry every time I read those emails. I am honored that these other countries want to publish me, and I can’t wait to connect with readers around the world because of it.

What’s one of your favorite quotes?
“We meet no ordinary people in our lives.” -C.S. Lewis

What was the last book that you read for fun?
WINTERSONG by S. Jae-Jones. Absolutely magical and engrossing. I stayed up until 2 AM to finish it.

Can we see a picture of your dog? 🙂 Does your dog ever help you with writing?
Yes absolutely! Her name is Sierra. She’s a sweet blue merle Australian Shepherd. She’s addicted to Frisbee and chasing squirrels. She likes to sit in my office reading chair while I write at my desk, and she’s very good and letting me know when it’s time for me to take a break. I could sit and write for hours, forget to eat, etc. until she comes and nuzzles her nose under my elbow.

What’s your most recent TV obsession?
THE LAST KINGDOM. I (obviously) love a good medieval drama.

What’s your favorite food? Curious minds want to know 😉
I love a good taco and homemade guacamole.

Are there any books by your fellow Swanky 17ers that you’d highly recommend?
Ooo yes! There are so many incredible books debuting next year but here are a few that I am excited for:

  • THE DISAPPEARANCES by Emily Bain Murphy
  • WAIT FOR ME by Caroline Leech
  • DIMPLE & RISHI by Sandhya Menon
  • DEAR MARTIN by Nic Stone
  • THE GREEN WELL by Margaret Rogerson
  • QALA ACADEMY by Tanaz Bhathena

I’ve always been fascinated with the meaning of names. We have artwork of our names on the wall with their meanings! I love how the meaning of Bienna’s name ended up meaning more for this character.

Gorgeous dog!!! My friend has always had Australian Shepherds!
I like high fantasy books as I am always fascinated by the author’s imagination, incorporating real world into the fantasy!
