BEA 2016 Recap Part One!

Welcome to my first BEA Recap post Yeah, yeah, I know. My recap is going up a bit late…Oops 😛 I’m going to do my best to leave NO details out, so I hope you don’t mind the recaps being long! Don’t worry, I’ll make them as entertaining as possible. 🙂

Now, let’s get started!!!

After waiting for BEA for months upon months, the day was finally here. I went through my day as normal, and then returned home, grabbed my bags, and headed to the airport. My flight was with Amanda (@beingperry) and her husband. While the company was lovely, unfortunately, the flight wasn’t so great. It was probably the noisiest flight I’ve ever been on. But hey, at least I had time to read! I read one book and one novella. So, we were all delighted when we were able to step out of the airplane and get away from the noise.

We left the plane and headed to baggage claim. Luckily we only got lost once or twice. In our defense, the airport is huge! We met up with Mia Siegert (Amanda’s roommate + a Bookitcon 2016 author) at baggage claim, and then took a cab to the hotel. It was quite a sketchy affair to be honest. You see, we were trying to find a shuttle to get to the hotel, and then found out after 30 minutes of waiting that we would have to take a cab instead. So, we started walking in the direction that the police officer pointed to, and didn’t see any cabs. Then, a random guy came up to us and asked where we were going. He then said, “I have a sedan. Follow me.” We stared at each other, unsure of what to do, but eventually followed him. Luckily, the sedan/cab ride went off without a hitch and we actually paid less than the fare for a shuttle. In the end, it turned out to be a win situation.

By the time we reached the hotel, it was after 11pm. I was exhausted, yet also extremely excited. After all, I wanted to see my roommates, especially Mishma! I DMed them to tell them that I arrived, and they told me to go to the elevator and I could meet them up to the room. Well, you;d think that was a simple task. But, of course, with my luck, it wasn’t. I got in the elevator and pressed the button to get to our room. I then watched as the elevator started moving up, and up, and up, and passed our floor, and then continued moving up, and up, and up, all the way to the top floor. It then stopped. The doors didn’t open. I tried pressing other buttons, but to no avail. I was stuck. Yes, I was stuck in the elevator. This went on for about 5 minutes, and I frantically texted my roommates. Luckily, the elevator went down to the lobby, and I was able to escape. I then waited like a lost puppy dog for Val to come get me. Yeah…it was an interesting beginning to my BEA trip.

I dropped off my bags at my room, and then went up to the other room, where most of my roommate group was hanging out. I was greeted by Shannon, Val, and Kalli. Mishma was still unpacking. Holly and Rashika were out and about in Chicago, coming home from a Maggie Stiefvater event, so I didn’t see them until later. We all talked for hours upon hours, and I didn’t end up going back to my room until after 1:30am in the morning (Chicago time), which meant 2:30am EST. Mishma and I ended up chatting for a while, and I didn’t end up actually falling asleep until 3am Chicago/ 4am EST. Yeah, I barely got any sleep, but hey- it was worth it!

Speaking of sleep…I set my alarm for 9am so that I’d be ready to start my day. As I woke to the sound of dogs barking (my ringtone), I heard Rashika sleepily murmur “what time is it? It’s not 9am…” I stared at my phone, confused. After all, it did say 9am.

Well, itt turns out that my iPhone didn’t automatically adjust to Chicago time, and it was actually 8am Chicago time, 9am EST.

So, I set my alarm for one more hour, and fell back asleep. When I woke up the second time, it was actually 9am, and I was ready to start my day. I previously downloaded the Publishers Weekly app on my phone, so I checked that and updated my schedule first thing in the morning. We then waited for CJ to come to the hotel, and Kalli, Mishma, CJ, Rashika, and I went to lunch. We went to this Italian/Indian place which was really delicious and had huge portions.

After that, we headed back to McCormick place and waited for BEA to begin!

Curious what happened next? I guess you’ll have to wait and read my next recap post. 😉

“I have a sedan. Follow me.” That’s just about the sketchiest thing a person could say! Glad it all turned out okay!
