Favorite Quote/Motto: “What an astonishing thing a book is. It’s a flat object made from a tree with flexible parts on which are imprinted lots of funny dark squiggles. But one glance at it and you’re inside the mind of another person, maybe somebody dead for thousands of years. Across the millennia, an author is speaking clearly and silently inside your head, directly to you. Writing is perhaps the greatest of human inventions, binding together people who never knew each other, citizens of distant epochs. Books break the shackles of time. A book is proof that humans are capable of working magic.”—Carl Sagan

Why did you decide to write about a Mermaid?
In every bathtub and swimming pool I played in as a child, I pretended to be a mermaid. When I got older, other interests vied for attention, but I was always drawn to mermaids and nymphs, especially in art and literature. A few years ago, I was swimming laps (literally) when the idea for what would become Emerge struck—and it wouldn’t let go!

Do you listen to songs when you write? If so, what songs were on your playlist while writing Emerge?
I actually can’t write with music playing, but I do listen to music right before I write to get me in the right mindset. The song I listen to most before sitting down to write the Mer Chronicles is “The Old Ways” by Loreena McKennitt, which sounds like a siren song to me.

For this series, I also sometimes listen to “Kiss Me” by Sixpence None the Richer, “California Gurls” by Katy Perry, and “Bittersweet Symphony” by the Verve.

What’s your favorite food? Curious minds want to know 😉
Chocolate Chip cookies—all the way! The soft, freshly baked kind ☺

What is one thing that surprised you about your journey to publication?
How welcoming and supportive the community of writers, bloggers, booksellers, librarians, and avid readers has been. Publishing a book is a dream in and of itself, but I never would have imagined all the fantastic people it would allow me to meet and count as friends.

Do you think that the cover fits the book well? Why?
Yes—I LOVE my cover. I think my publisher did such an incredible job of capturing the book, which has an ethereal, alluring tone. From a thematic perspective, it really gets to the heart of the story that Lia blends into the ocean and is being drawn in by it.

My favorite detail is the way the bottom of Lia’s gown billows just like waves in the ocean (I’ve always loved gorgeous gowns on covers when they suit the story and the character, which is definitely the case for Emerge). Also, the sparkles behind the title make the book feel magical.

How old were you when you decided that you wanted to be an author?
For me, it was a gradual process. I always loved writing and storytelling, but it wasn’t until I was writing Emerge (which is my first novel) that I started thinking of becoming an author as a serious goal. Writing this book really did change the course of my life.

I saw on your website that you foster rescue puppies! Could you tell us a little bit about your experience with fostering? Also, a couple of cute pictures would be great. 🙂
I do! Since I travel quite a bit, it wouldn’t be fair to a dog for me to have one of my own right now. Fostering is a really wonderful way for me to take care of dogs when I’m home and help get them out of high-kill shelters.
Fostering a mom and puppies is a lot of work but a ton of fun because you get to see the puppies grow, and you get to help prepare them for their forever-homes!

And now…it’s time for some foster PUPPY PICTURES!!!

Great interview! THOSE PUPPIES ARE ADORABLE. I may have spent the majority of the time cooing at my screen *cough* *cough*. I read Emerge and *loved* it! It was amazing and I loved how it uniquely reinvented The Little Mermaid.
