Four girls with the power to control the elements and save the world from a terrible evil must come together in the first epic novel in a brand-new series.

When Phantoms—massive beasts made from nightmares and darkness—suddenly appeared and began terrorizing the world, four girls, the Effigies, each gained a unique power to control one of the classical elements: earth, air, fire, and water. Since then, four girls across the world have continually fought against the Phantoms, fulfilling their cosmic duty. And when one Effigy dies, another girl gains her power as a replacement.

But now, with technologies in place to protect the world’s major cities from Phantom attacks, the Effigies have stopped defending humanity and, instead, have become international celebrities, with their heroic feats ranked, televised, and talked about in online fandoms.

Until the day that New York City’s protection against the Phantoms fails, a man seems to be able to control them by sheer force of will, and Maia, a high school student, unexpectedly becomes the Fire Effigy.

Now Maia has been thrown into battle with three girls who want nothing to do with one another. But with the first human villain that the girls have ever faced, and an army of Phantoms preparing for attack, there isn’t much time for the Effigies to learn how to work together.

Can the girls take control of their destinies before the world is destroyed forever?

I am THRILLED to be able to host the cover reveal for Fate of Flames (Effigies #1) by Sarah Raughley!!! First of all, if you haven’t met Sarah, YOU MUST! She’s a sweetheart. <3 So, when she approached me to ask about hosting the cover reveal, I of course started flailing and jumping up and down.

Can you tell us about yourself?
I’m a YA author, grad student and professional geek/fangirl (too many fandoms to name). I published my first standalone book two years ago, but The Effigies will be my first legit SERIES so I’m super excited!

Are there any people that influenced your writing style and/or started your desire to write?
JK Rowling (I know, cliché lol), O.R. Melling and C.S. Lewis, probably. I read these authors when I was really young and what I loved about their writing was how vividly they were able to build these imaginative and immersive fantasy worlds. I especially love that their books always contain this cool element of epic fantasy crossing with real world characters/settings. It’s definitely a concept that helped inspired this series.

And actually, these next two aren’t novelists, but I’d also have to say that Joss Whedon (Buffy), Hironobu Sakaguchi (creator of the Final Fantasy series) and other such creators of geek content really inspired the way I think about storytelling. I don’t think I’d be telling the same kinds of stories if I hadn’t grown up watching those shows or playing those video games.

Do you listen to music when you write? If so, what type of music?
I actually didn’t listen to a whole lot of music while I was writing Fate of Flames, but when I did, I had Janet Jackson (because I’m always listening to Janet), Crystal Kay, Kalafina and a bunch of Kpop songs on the playlist! I don’t usually have any strict musical preferences while writing – I usually come up with a playlist for each book after the writing’s done.

What’s your favorite food? Curious minds want to know… 😉
I have a weird thing with cupcakes. Like, there’s a cupcake shop AND a bakery right outside my university T_T And I actually had to ban myself from going there at one point lmao. The self-ban is almost over though … when Fate of Flames comes out trust there will be plenty of cupcakes available. Cupcakes for all!

What is the craziest thing in real life that inspired you for a scene in your book?
The thing is, crazy stuff doesn’t usually happen to little boring old me. But usually it’s the mundane stuff that inspires me to write the exciting scenes in my book, usually because I think about adding some kind of epic element to the everyday. I think I was bored while stuck in traffic when I suddenly thought of what could happen if there was a giant phantom barreling down the highway towards me 😉

I know that lots of people heard that Fate of Flames was similar to Sailor Moon, and immediately screamed SIGN ME UP! Is there anything you want to say to Sailor Moon fans?
I remember watching Sailor Moon when it first started showing on YTV (Canadians will know :D). And it was totally cheesy in some aspects (I wasn’t yet well versed in the idiosyncrasies of sentai), but I just loved the idea of a bad ass girl squad with magic powers kicking ass. The four Effigies have been characters in my head for years (along with other magical girl ideas), but when they announced Sailor Moon Crystal in 2012 that’s when I was inspired to go ahead with this project. The idea was: what if the Sailor Scouts/Senshi were famous and had to fight evil in the present day while having to deal with rampant social media and (sometimes vicious) online fandom culture? I kind of wanted to capture that spirit. I’m so excited to share this with everyone 🙂

If you were one of the Effigies, which element would you want to be in control of?
Water! Great offense and defense. You can pull water out of almost anywhere, use it to destroy, defend, heal – so many uses if you’re imaginative enough to know what to do with it! I’m tactical like that lol.

What was your first thought when seeing the cover?
Something like, “OMGGGGALKAJWERKJWERW” or some such lol. I was actually going for a walk with my mom when my editor emailed me the picture and I damn near broke down crying in the middle of the street! It was amazing. Felt like years of hard work finally paying off. Definitely a ‘never EVER give up’ moment.

What’s a stronger element in this series: Sisterhood or Romance?
Though there’s both in the series, I’d say sisterhood is very much at the heart of the novel. The Effigies are a bad ass magical girl squad with the weight of the world on their shoulders, though who’s to say you can’t have a little romance while trying to defend the world? I actually almost pitched this to my agent as Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants with Giant Monsters lol.

Out of the four Effigies, who was your favorite character to write and who was the hardest?
So, out of the four Effigies, Maia, the main character, Lake, Chae Rin, and Belle, I would have to say the easiest girl to write was Lake, while the hardest was Belle. Lake is just a lot of fun – and adorable, gorgeous pop star who uses her Effigy status to get ahead in the celebrity world. Belle on the other hand is the squad’s ice cold Warrior Princess. She was a bit harder to write because she is just so different from me (more so than the other girls). But I loved writing her all the same!

I didn’t think that it was possible to be more excited than I already was, but this interview proved me wrong! I. NEED. THIS. BOOK. SO. BADLY. *grabby hands* Please tell me I’m not the only one feeling this way!

*~~~About the Author~~~*

Sarah Raughley grew up in Southern Ontario writing stories about freakish little girls with powers because she secretly wanted to be one. She is a huge fangirl of anything from manga to SF/F TV to Japanese Role Playing Games, but she will swear up and down that she was inspired by ~Jane Austin~ at book signings.

On top of being a YA (young adult) Writer, Sarah is currently completing a PhD in English, because the sight of blood makes her queasy (which crossed Medical School off the list).

She is represented by The Bradford Literary Agency.

WOOOOWWW. This book sounds SOOO GOOOD. I want the whole series, like, yesterday.I think, without having read the details of the effigies powers, that I’d choose to be either fire or water. And OMGosh THAT COVER. It’s absolutely GORGEOUS.

I really enjoyed the interview, too. It turns out she & I have a few things in common. I,too am a fan of Rowling&Whedon.I’m also pretty sure I could totally live off of cupcakes. Mmmmm, cuuupcaaakes.

Can’t wait to read this book(ahem,SERIES)!!

  2. Oh my gosh, I LOVE books with powers. They’re so great, I wish there were more of them 🙂 and Sailor Moon was so good, I haven’t seen the new one though. But the comparison really makes me want to read the book even more xD! I haven’t heard of Fate of Flames until now, but it sounds super good 🙂 and the cover is nice too.
