novel newcomers

And…I’m back with another Novel Newcomer post! Yay! In case you’ve forgotten what NN is, you can check out all of the details HERE.

I’ll Mark Myself With Stories

Hi everyone, my name is Jamie and I run Books and Ladders and co-blog on both Queen of the Bookshelves  and Books Are My Fandom. I am really excited to be featured on Nori’s blog today to give you some bookish thoughts! (And I’m super happy to have you on my blog! Thanks for being here Jamie!)

When deciding on what to post, I was listening to the song ‘I Woke Up In A Car’ by Something Corporate and the line “I met a girl who kept tattoos for homes that she had loved/If I were her, I’d paint my body ‘til all my skin was gone” really stuck with me and I was like, “ah yes. That is what I will post about!” So I have a 5+1 list for you today featuring some of my favourite quotes from books! Not only will I tell you the quote, but I will explain my reasoning behind why I like it so much and tell you where I would tattoo it on myself.

“I’m not afraid of dying. I’m afraid of dying here.” from A DARKER SHADE OF MAGIC by V.E. Schwab

Lila Bard is my hero. She sees something she wants and she goes for it, no holding back. When we first meet Lila, she is looking for something new and different – and most importantly, a way out. I see so much of myself in Lila, and this quote is one that resonated with me when I first read it, plus ADSOM is one of my favourite books of all time.
I would get this tattooed on the back of my right arm in a plain, serif font for all of it except for ‘here’, which would be in a script that looped itself into an “X” (for “X” marks the spot).

“It’s so she can fly.” from THE TRUTH ABOUT FOREVER by Sarah Dessen

If you do follow me in some way, shape, or form, you will know that I live and breathe Sarah Dessen novels. TTAF was my first Sarah Dessen novel, and this line is my favourite from it for a multitude of reasons, one of which is that it is pretty super romantic in context. Being my first Sarah Dessen novel, and the novel that got me into reading YA, this line has stuck with me throughout my formative high school years and well into adulthood.
I would get this tattooed on my ribcage on the right hand side in a wispy font that you can read, but it almost looks as though it’s being blown away.

“Why not shatter the sky?” from FIRE FALLING by Elise Kova

Even thinking about this line now gives me chills. This quote is everything I love about this series: Vhalla taking control and doing what she has to in order to survive. I love this line so much because Vhalla is finally realizing that she can be a mix of what the Senate fears and the person she should be.
I would get this on my right forearm with the Silver Wing Press logo right beside it.

“No sir, the girl worth having won’t wait for anybody” from THIS SIDE OF PARADISE by F. Scott Fitzgerald

There is so much that I love about this quote that I can’t just pinpoint one thing, but the biggest aspect of it is that I am the girl worth having, and I shouldn’t have to wait for anyone. If I want something, I should get it now. That may sound dramatic and very vain, but why should I have to wait around for someone to make up their mind when I have already decided. If I want to do something, I will do it, and you can either follow along or go your own way – because no matter what, I will be okay.
I would get this tattooed on the top of my left thigh in typewriter font because I think that looks super cool for tattoos.

“When I stopped being who I am I found myself” from ELEVEN MINUTES by Paulo Coelho

Much like the quote above, this one has always just resonated with me on a grand scheme of things level and not a small picture scene. I think a lot of my love for this quote comes from the fact that we all wear masks and all try to be something we are not, but that’s not who we are in the quiet of our minds. We should all strive to be the people we are inside because those are good people.
I would get this tattooed on the nape of my neck in a plain serif font.

On top of all these, I already do have a tattoo, so that’s my +1. I have the quote “Where those of wit and learning will always find their kind” from HARRY POTTER AND THE PHILOSOPHER’S STONE by J.K. Rowling  on the inside of my left arm. I am a Ravenclaw through and through, and Harry Potter has left such an impact on my life that I knew my first tattoo ever had to be related to Harry Potter. You can see this one on Instagram below:

That’s it for this week! See you in two weeks with a new Novel Newcomers post featuring another blogger (or two or three). I can’t wait! 😉

  1. What an awesome post Jamie! I’m always so fascinated by bookish tattoos and the thoughts behind them. These are amazing quotes and I love how deeply they speak to you.

  2. Sarah Cone

Two of my favorite book people + Book quotes+ tattoos = JOYGASM. I love this post SO.MUCH. I have several tattoos but none of them are book quotes, only because there are so many awesome book quotes that there’s no way I could pick just one. Or two. Or ten. Jaime,I’ve yet to read the books you talked about (though now I’m totally going to go check them out) but I love the quotes you chose and the reasons behind them. I didn’t think you could get any higher but you just went up by like, a gazillion points on my ‘Badass&Awesome’ scale. 🙂

  3. […] Novel Newcomers – the second of awesome guest posts from bloggers who started last year. Last week, Nori featured favorite book quotes written by Jaime @ Books and Ladders. This week, we have Rachel from Go Read a Book taking over Bookwyrming Thoughts for the day. […]
