Never Never
Brianna Shrum
Release Date: 09/22/2015

James Hook is a child who only wants to grow up.

When he meets Peter Pan, a boy who loves to pretend and is intent on never becoming a man, James decides he could try being a child—at least briefly. James joins Peter Pan on a holiday to Neverland, a place of adventure created by children’s dreams, but Neverland is not for the faint of heart. Soon James finds himself longing for home, determined that he is destined to be a man. But Peter refuses to take him back, leaving James trapped in a world just beyond the one he loves. A world where children are to never grow up.

But grow up he does.

And thus begins the epic adventure of a Lost Boy and a Pirate.

This story isn’t about Peter Pan; it’s about the boy whose life he stole. It’s about a man in a world that hates men. It’s about the feared Captain James Hook and his passionate quest to kill the Pan, an impossible feat in a magical land where everyone loves Peter Pan.

Are there any people that influenced your writing style and/or started your desire to write?

My grandpa actually kickstarted my desire to write; we used to write poetry together when I was little under this big lamp in his living room. 🙂 But as far as authors who’ve influenced me, I’d have to say Neil Gaiman, Victoria Schwab, and JK Rowling. (But I’m pretty sure JK Rowling has influenced pretty much EVERYBODY haha)

Do you listen to music when you write? If so, what type of music?

I need silence when I write! I mean, I end up listening to something on TV in the background or my kids running around, but no music, usually. If I do listen to music at all, it’s usually something sweeping and instrumental–a soundtrack like Gladiator, Outlander, Braveheart, 2003 Peter Pan…

What’s your favorite food? Curious minds want to know… 😉

OoOoOoOoOoh, that’s a good question. I vacillate between a deep love of baby back ribs and gaeng daeng chicken curry!

If you could have been the original author of any book, what would it have been and why?

Harry Potter! Then I’d be rich! ;D For real though, I think I’d love to have written Anansi Boys. It’s gorgeously written and the world is so incredibly deep and the mythology and the characters and, and, and….excuse me while I fangirl.

Are you currently working on a book? If so, can you give us any juicy details? 🙂

Yes! My brother and I are co-writing a dark epic fantasy from the POV of a rather dashing villain who was very very loosely inspired by Dorian Gray. (There’s an extremely forbidden hate-to-love romance in it which I am PARTICULARLY excited about ^_^)

On days when you are not reading or writing, what are you doing?

Hanging out with my two little boys, or gaming with my husband. We are TOTAL geeks, so we’re usually playing Magic: The Gathering, tabletop gaming with our friends, playing board games, or video games. Or watching Firefly or one of a billion Netflix things.  All the games! All the geek!

How did you get the inspiration to write from Hook’s POV?

Ever since I read the picture book, “The True Story of the Three Little Pigs,” I’ve had a soft spot for villains. And I just kind of thought, what is the deal with James Hook? Why on earth is this pirate, who should be out pirating, living HERE, in a land of children who hate him? And it spiraled from there.

When you were young, what did you think of Peter Pan? Did you cast him as the villain?

When I was young, I totally loved Peter Pan. I had a dread fascination with villains (Hook, Scar, Shere Khan), but I pretty much assumed that the obvious hero was the hero, and the obvious villain was the rascal–even if I did like him more than I should’ve. 😉 But I had a total Pan crush. (NOT ANYMORE! HA!)

  1. Although I didn’t end up liking the book as much as I wanted to, I’m really excited for her future works. In the interview she mentioned that she was working on a dark, epic fantasy with her brother which includes a forbidden romance, and I’m seriously like, ” I need this now! ” lol. I just loveeeee dark reads and forbidden romances such much, so I’m excited to see what they come up with!

  2. So, I AM really excited about Never Never, but also, that book with the Dorian Gray-villainish character and love-hate romance….GRABBY HANDS. I MUST POSSESS IT.

For the SST I reviewed this one and I have to say I absolutely loved reading it! I was glued to my chair and couldn’t stop reading until I knew how it ended. It really did a great job of characterising Hook and the best thing is that it didn’t paint him as a good guy, but created grey lines between the definition of good and bad so it was up to us to choose. Ooh, and it was one of the best retellings!
