Welcome to the Sunday Street Team!!! I am pleased to have Brianna Shrum as one of September’s featured authors.
Are there any people that influenced your writing style and/or started your desire to write?
My grandpa actually kickstarted my desire to write; we used to write poetry together when I was little under this big lamp in his living room. 🙂 But as far as authors who’ve influenced me, I’d have to say Neil Gaiman, Victoria Schwab, and JK Rowling. (But I’m pretty sure JK Rowling has influenced pretty much EVERYBODY haha)
Do you listen to music when you write? If so, what type of music?
I need silence when I write! I mean, I end up listening to something on TV in the background or my kids running around, but no music, usually. If I do listen to music at all, it’s usually something sweeping and instrumental–a soundtrack like Gladiator, Outlander, Braveheart, 2003 Peter Pan…
What’s your favorite food? Curious minds want to know… 😉
OoOoOoOoOoh, that’s a good question. I vacillate between a deep love of baby back ribs and gaeng daeng chicken curry!
If you could have been the original author of any book, what would it have been and why?
Harry Potter! Then I’d be rich! ;D For real though, I think I’d love to have written Anansi Boys. It’s gorgeously written and the world is so incredibly deep and the mythology and the characters and, and, and….excuse me while I fangirl.
Are you currently working on a book? If so, can you give us any juicy details? 🙂
Yes! My brother and I are co-writing a dark epic fantasy from the POV of a rather dashing villain who was very very loosely inspired by Dorian Gray. (There’s an extremely forbidden hate-to-love romance in it which I am PARTICULARLY excited about ^_^)
On days when you are not reading or writing, what are you doing?
Hanging out with my two little boys, or gaming with my husband. We are TOTAL geeks, so we’re usually playing Magic: The Gathering, tabletop gaming with our friends, playing board games, or video games. Or watching Firefly or one of a billion Netflix things. All the games! All the geek!
How did you get the inspiration to write from Hook’s POV?
Ever since I read the picture book, “The True Story of the Three Little Pigs,” I’ve had a soft spot for villains. And I just kind of thought, what is the deal with James Hook? Why on earth is this pirate, who should be out pirating, living HERE, in a land of children who hate him? And it spiraled from there.
When you were young, what did you think of Peter Pan? Did you cast him as the villain?
When I was young, I totally loved Peter Pan. I had a dread fascination with villains (Hook, Scar, Shere Khan), but I pretty much assumed that the obvious hero was the hero, and the obvious villain was the rascal–even if I did like him more than I should’ve. 😉 But I had a total Pan crush. (NOT ANYMORE! HA!)
