I must admit- I have a bit of a bias towards this book. First of all, I’m a New Jersey girl, and the main character is a New Jersey girl. Second of all, the cover is GORGEOUS AND PURPLE AND BEAUTIFUL!!! When I saw the cover and read the description, I immediately added it to my ‘need to request’ pile. With that being said, I had very high expectations for The Summer After You and Me. While I enjoyed the book, I was slightly disappointed.
Luce was the main character. She was your typical teen who lived down the shore (i.e. lived near the beach, for those of you who don’t live in NJ 😉 ). To be honest, the majority of the book focused on Luce trying to repair her damaged house from Sandy (a hurricane that hit NJ hard a few years ago) and her damaged heart, from her summertime neighbor Connor. I was trying to put together a plot to include in the review, but that sentence just about sums it up. This book was extremely driven by romance, and a love triangle. Yes, there was a love triangle.
Even though there wasn’t much plot, in my opinion, I did like the author’s writing style, especially the opening paragraph. With permission from the author, I have included it below:
“I open the window shade in my third-story attic bedroom anticipating my usual- somewhat obstructed- ocean view and instead get an eyeful of Connor Malloy, sans shirt, on the roof of his parents’ bungalow. Better than a mocha latte with two shots of expresso and whipped cream, as far as early morning eye-openers and guilty pleasures go.”
Isn’t that a great way to start a book? I thought so!
Overall, I liked this book as a fluffy book, but it wasn’t spectacular. I give it 3.5 stars.
