December’s AOTM: Katherine Greyson + GIVEAWAY!!!

Posted December 1, 2014 by Nori in Giveaway / 1 Comment

Welcome to the fifth AOTM post! I’d like to welcome this month’s featured author, Katherine Greyson!
10 Questions with Katherine Greyson

1. Can you tell us about yourself and what made you decide to go into writing?
My name is Katherine Greyson and I am the author of Everyone Keeps Secrets, a romantic suspense series set in the mysterious town of Stony Creek. One afternoon, I was thinking about all the wonderful characters that float around inside my head. They’re mischievous and exciting, and always seem to be getting into some mixed-up adventure. Then suddenly it dawned on me—I’m selfish keeping all these characters and stories to myself. So I sat down and began to write.
2. Do you feel that new technology has helped or hurt new authors? Why?
HELPED! Ten years ago, the only way for a writer to get their stories to readers was through a giant gate known as—the publishing house. Very few writers could make it by the guards, but now ALL writers can go directly to the people: the author who writes that obscure book about fantasy, sci-fi, time-traveling ninjas, or the photographer who loves 12th century medieval castles with pointy spires. Whatever you love to write about, technology has given authors an economically viable way to reach them. Maybe it won’t be a bestseller, but it will find an audience. I would like to clarify that by no means am I saying publishers are evil ogres. They are business people who simply have limited economic resources. They can’t invest in every book. They have to pick ones that will return money on their investment. Many books never do, let alone earn the publishers a profit. Publishing houses, like all companies, aren’t sterile giant entities run by tyrant like CEO’s. They are made up of people: the truck driver working double shifts to put his kid through college, the young artist living in a small run-down studio apartment, the old guy who works in the mailroom.
3. For your own reading, do you prefer eBooks or paperback/hardcovers?
I really hate hardcovers, not because they are expensive, but because I get tired of holding them up! Also, I feel horribly guilty if I bend back the binding too far. Like some librarian from my past will jump out of the book and scold me.
4. What’s your favorite food? (Inquiring minds want to know! 😉 )
Tea. English preferably. I drink it constantly while I write.
5. What is the craziest thing in real life that inspired you for a scene in your book?
My high school. It really looks like a prison. After you read my book, you’ll understand exactly what I mean.
6. What’s your favorite book that you have ever read?
Ouch. That is a tough question. I have so many I really don’t want to leave one out. I will say this, I just purchased a copy of Ethan Frome to reread. I haven’t read that story since junior high school.
7. Do you listen to music as you write? If so, what music?
I love music. It lets me float away. I love almost every genre of music. Classical, hard rock, country, but my favorite has to be soundtracks. I know that few people admit that they love movie and TV soundtracks, but I do.
8. On days when you are not reading or writing, what are you doing? Cleaning. UGH! But sometimes you have to step away and stretch your legs. If not your feet go numb. 🙂
9. Have you ever experienced writer’s block? If so, how have you gotten past it?
I have not. I have experienced writer’s fear. I don’t know if there is a clinical name for it, but it is where you fear people won’t like your stories so much, you never publish. It is debilitating. Fortunately, my loving husband, who is a bestselling mystery writer, kept encouraging me. He said, “Your stories are great. Get them out there.” His name is Christopher Greyson.
10. Do you have any tips for budding writers?
Keep at it. It may take a while to find an audience, but they’re out there, and they want to read your work.
